Designing new kayaks is hard. And unfortunately, not all of them survive the cut. Waning sales, high production costs, and extraneous business decisions can all lead to a discontinued kayak. Since we’re in the business of talking about kayaks we thought it would be useful to keep a list of all the discontinued kayaks. We update this list periodically as new models come and go. Models here won’t be found on our other kayak databases. We’ve only been keeping track of kayaks since 2019. So this is by no means a comprehensive list. There are tons of models no longer in production that aren’t found below.

A Kayak’s after-life is a bit nebulous. In some cases when a brand folds the entire line and accompanying molds can be sold off to a competitor. But when a single model is retired it usually goes the way of the DoDo. The last thing any manufacturer wants is to see a non-branded version of the same boat sailing next to theirs.

Discontinued Kayak Models

We’ve slimmed down the fields we normally display here, since, you won’t be buying these first-hand any time soon (if ever). There are currently 24 discontinued kayak models. And notably, none of them are pedal kayaks.

Hobie Changes Hands

The Hobie Kayak company was quietly sold to a private equity group in January of 2021. New management began working alongside old management and one of the first appreciable changes was the consolidation of the production line. Product line consolidation is generally a smart business decision. Broad product offerings requires extra parts, tools, and processes that can be streamlined with a slimmer portfolio. And while it’s regrettable some of these models were retired early, it opens up both budget and R&D for new and innovative products, like the Hobie Lynx and their new line of inflatables.

Hobie Mirage Pro Angler 17T

The Hobie Mirage Pro Angler 17T was one of the most expensive tandem fishing kayaks ever produced. It measured 17′ long with a width of 43.5″ and weighed in at a colossal 244 lbs.

The PA 17T had some worthy innovations that negated issues plaguing other tandem fishing kayaks. The long length allowed both parties to fish without tangling each other up. A 900 lb capacity easily accommodated a small cache of fishing munitions. Finally the PA 17T had three drive wells to allow different seating configurations. You could sit in a traditional manner for serious pedaling. Or you can flip a seat around and sit face to face for a more social experience.

At a price of $6,599 the Hobie Mirage Pro Angler 17T was the most expensive single hull tandem fishing kayak out there. The PA17 was an awesome boat, but just barely qualified as an actual kayak. It’s oversized features were great for extended river-cruises. But handling it out of the water must have been an absolute bear.

Hobie Revolution 16

Hobie’s Revolution line of kayaks were largely aimed at paddlers looking for speed in big water. The Revolution 16 featured a slim beam and streamlined monohull design built for speed. At 16′ long and weighing just 92 lbs the revolution sliced through the water with the mirage pedal drive. Given what we know about kayak hull speed it’s a safe bet that this was one of the fastest fishing kayaks ever made, if not the fastest.

Luckily the Revolution line lives on. And the Hobie Revolution 13′ is still being produced today. We expect the 16′ model was discontinued since it filled a very small niche and lacked sufficient demand. A 16′ long boat isn’t a peach to store or transport. If you live near a beach and run across a 16′ Revo for sale don’t hesitate to snatch it up. This boat was a thing of beauty.

Hobie Mirage 14T

The Hobie Mirage I4T was aCadillac of inflatable fishing kayaks. Premium lawn chair style seats, two 180 mirage pedal drives, built in rudder, and a drop stitch floor put the I14T in the same league as plastic yaks. It measured 14′ long and weighed. 67.1 lbs. And the I14T could fold up into a rolling case 4′ long, 2′ wide, and 1′ thick.

The I14T retailed for $4,089 and included two paddles with a two year warranty for 2019 and newer models. We expect it was retired to make room for the new Hobie Mirage Itrek 14 Duo.

The Shutdown in Muskegon

Hemisphere Design Works was formed in the merger of KL Outdoors and Quebec based GSC Technologies under the private equity firm New Water Capital in April of 2017. At the time of the merger Hemisphere Design Works was the largest kayak producer in the world. They manufactured multiple models under kayak brands including Evoke, Future Beach, and Sun Dolphin. These brands were primarily known for their low price point and wide availability in big box stores. They were all manufactured close to the firm’s headquarters in Muskegon, Michigan.

Unfortunately, for reasons that aren’t well known, the company shut down in late 2019 due to “challenging business circumstances“. Which is about as clear as mud underneath an even larger more opaque layer of mud. There were rumors that manufacturing was going to resume. But as of Summer 2021 there’s scant evidence this is true. Time will tell if any of these brands or models resurface, but don’t hold your breath.

Overview on Discontinued Kayaks

Although it can be bittersweet to see a kayak sail off into the horizon it’s ultimately a good thing. We’d all rather have a model leave than an entire brand; and that’s exactly what model retirement enables. On a positive note discontinued kayaks pave the way for new models to make their debut. Such is the kayak circle of life.

One of the biggest disadvantages to going out on a kayak is its lack of range. In both paddle and pedal yaks your body is the motor; so you’re constrained by your own physical abilities. Five to ten miles on flat water is quite the workout. And if the wind or current are against you than even going 100 meters can feel like a marathon. It’s technically feasible to add a motor to any kayak. But you’ll find it’s a heckofa lot easier to add power to a boat that was designed for it. Our list of motorized kayaks includes boats that are easy to outfit using same brand and third party propulsion systems. Transom mounts, pod cavities, or integrated motors differentiate these kayaks from the competition. With a little diy effort you can put down the paddle and get fishing without a single stroke.

Most Expensive Motorized Kayak

Old Town Sportsman AutoPilot 136

Old Town Canoe’s Sportsman line debuted in 2020 with 11 new models. Without a doubt the standout stars of the next gen OTC lineup are the Sportsman AutoPilot 136 and 120. The AutoPilot’s defining feature is the center mounted 45 lb thrust Minn Kota trolling motor with GPS enabled spot lock technology and wireless controls. Minn Kota’s motor comes with a bluetooth enabled fob that allows the Captain to change thrust and steer with one hand. GPS enabled Spot Lock technology serves as an electric anchoring device comparable to dynamic positioning systems (DPS) found in industrial tankers.

Spot Lock really is a game changer for fishing. In kayak fishing half the battle is finding a great spot and the other half is staying there. With Spot Lock you just press a button and your boat will stay in place; automatically compensating for wind and current in real time to keep you still. And all this accomplished with just a press of a button. There’s no dropping an anchor and drifting into position, or reeling it up when your done. When you’re ready to go just press turn off spot lock, tell Chewie to hit it, and buckle up for the ride.

The AutoPilot 136 is packed with storage, utility, and well thought out design features. The motor and all components are ruggedized for saltwater so you can get out in big water if you’re daring. These features and innovations don’t come cheap. The Autopilot 136 costs $4,000 all in which puts it in the top end of all fishing kayaks. But we can’t think of another kayak that packs as much tech and power in between its gunwales as the AutoPilot 136. If you want a top of the line fishing experience than definitely consider making this your go-to ride on the water.

Most Affordable Motorized Kayak

Jonny Boats Bass 100

Jonny Boats Bass 100 is a speedy 10′ ride that combines the best traits of both kayaks and bass boats. This kayak was designed from the ground up to be motorized and sports some seriously great design features. To begin with the Bass 100 has a planing hull which is a first in modern fishing kayaks. Most kayaks feature displacement hulls that provide a hard limit on top-end speed. The planing hull makes the Jonny Boat one of the fastest kayaks with an outboard motor.

Speaking of motors the Bass 100 is capable of servicing both electric and gas varieties. The stern transom can fit a 2.5 hp outboard motor. Control is made easy with throttle and steering hand controls via the accessory motor kit. The center recess fits a trolling motor in a pod for sneaking up on fish. Once you’ve targeted your quarry you can stand up and cast while using the Uni-Track stand-up bar for extra stability. Rod holders, a height and trim adjustable seat, and gunwale mounted accessory rails round out the Bass 100 as a complete fishing package.

Small & Speedy

If you’re looking for a motorized kayak the Bass 100 is an incredible and versatile compact option. The $899 price tag is extremely approachable and delivers a great value. Be prepared to drop some dough on unlocking the foll potential of this craft though. Once you factor in the outboard, trolling motor pod, stand up bar, battery, and motor kit you’re closer to right around $3,000. A full sized bass boats,without all the bells and whistles, starts at around $20,000. At $899 we think the fully loaded Jonny Boats Bass 100 is pretty darn affordable. And it will still fit in the back of your truck.

Our Pick for the Best Value Motorized Kayak

NuCanoe Flint

We had a tough time choosing just a single kayak from this list, because they’re all great kayaks. The NuCanoe Flint wins our pick because of its versatility and light weight.. At 11’3″ the Flint strikes a fine balance between portability and tracking/speed. The open cockpit allows for unlimited configurations and will fit a wide variety of third party gear and equipment. At just 63 lbs you should have no problem car-topping the Flint or carrying it to the water.

NuCanoe models can be paddled, pedaled, or motorized, and the Flint is no different.The transom in the back can fit up to a 2.5 hp outboard motor or electric trolling motor. On the low end a battery, charger, trolling motor, and tiller will run between $300 and $500, putting you all-in at ~$1,500. If, however, you’re looking to keep up with the big boys then you can really trick it out. Add an outboard 2.5, bow mount trolling motor, swivel mount chair and you can cruise in style.

We chose the NuCanoe Flint for our best value because it offers the greatest flexibility in upgrading. The Flint offers extraordinary flexibility that makes it easy to pace your path to power. You could start with a watersnake and transition to the outboard. Or just start from the get go gunning with an outboard and break some wake zones. Either way there is a plethora of both in-brand and third party accessories that can fit the Flint.

Overview on Motorized kayaks

We’ve all reached that point on the water. When a rainstorm pops up out of nowhere and you’re a 30 minute paddle out from dock. Its moments like those when the grace of paddling very quickly evaporates and your first thought is a string of expletives. Your second thought is probably, it’s time to upgrade. Motorized kayaks can bypass tedious paddling in favor of rip-roaring propulsion. While the chugging thump of a two stroke isn’t nearly as graceful as paddling, it sure is a lot faster. Motorized kayaks are one of the fastest growing sectors in kayak fishing and we expect to see more models and innovations continue to hit the market. Fly fishing is a graceful sport full of beauty. The long arcing sweeps of line slicing through the air is entrancing as a flick of the wrist transcends into the perfect cast. Delicate flies with minute hooks and exotic materials entice all manner of fish to seemingly jump out of the water. The serenity and joy experienced by fly fisherman is a large part of the allure; it’s a simpler and more natural method. We all wish we could wade into a nearby babbling brook after short jaunt through the forest. The truth, however, is that most of us end up having to do some paddling on our fishing journey to reach those perfect spots. And that’s where a proper fly fishing kayak will help you commune with nature.

One of the tenets of fly fishing is simplicity. Anglers forego spinners and baitcasters for a simpler fly reel and rod to catch their prey. Most Expensive Fly Fishing Kayak

Jackson Mayfly

The Mayfly has been described as the Ultimate Fly Fishing Kayak. And we’re inclined to agree. The Mayfly was designed from the ground up to provide a thoughtful kayaking experience for fly anglers. Every little nuisance that pesters fly fisherman on other kayaks has been thought of and addressed.

Upon first glance the most noticeable feature is the large open deck. Mounted in the middle is an innovative and removable footrest. The footrest features rounded corners and smoothed surfaces to help avoid snags. Two pieces of gear track on each side provide a mounting spot for a fishfinder – through hull transducer recesses underneath and a hollow base for battery storage make mounting your fish finder a breeze. Fold out pockets on each side of the front deck easily store fly boxes for quick access. Two molded in fly reel holders to the rear of the seat make storing 9 ft fly rods, front facing or rear facing, a breeze.

Not Just for Flying

Aside from fly specific features the Jackson Mayfly has numerous aspects that make it a great kayak for all types of fishing. The sharp entry bow accompanied by pronounced twin chines on each side of the hull provide excellent tracking for paddling and stability for standing. The raised lawn chair style seat is height adjustable and trimable for optimal configuration. A spacious rear tankwell is bordered with t-track for additional storage and accessories. Finally a bow and stern hatch provide ample room for camping gear and your hardcopy edition of Leaves of Grass.

The Jackson Mayfly measures 12’7″ long and weighs just 89 lbs without the seat, which is pretty light for a kayak in this class. The Mayfly lists for $2,000 but can often be found for around $1,800 at local retailers. It’s near the upper end for a 12′ paddle yak but it’s probably the best fly-fishing kayak out there. If you’re a dedicated fly fisherman and have no interest in spinning or baitcasting than the Mayfly is the fly fishing kayak for you. If, however, you’re a more versatile angler than you may want to consider looking at something less focused.

Crescent Ultralite

We’ve highlighted the Crescent Ultalite before because it’s an amazing boat. The Ultralite is 10’2″ long and weighs only 49 lbs. It’s one of the lightest rotomolded fishing kayaks available on the market. At $699 the Ultralite delivers on the core competencies of a great kayak and eschews frivolous features in exchange for an affordable and streamlined paddling experience.

The Ultralite makes for a great fly fishing kayak because of its simplicity and light weight. Most anglers will have no problem car-topping it or hauling it through the woods to a river launch point. The open deck provides plenty of space for fly line to fall without getting tangled up. The low sitting seat is perfect for paddling upstream. Jumping back in after some wading should prove a breeze. An adequately sized tankwell and bow hatch provide plenty of space for an afternoon outing.

While the Crescent Ultralite may not be the fanciest kayak out there it is one of the best. We say that because Crescent focused on maximizing this craft’s quality rather than it’s utility. So although it can’t do everything, what it can do it does masterfully. Definitely consider the Crescent Ultralite, regardless of your affinity for fly fishing. Also check out its older brother, the Lite Tackle, which adds an extra 2′ of length for only $200 more.

Our Pick for the Best Value Fly Fishing Kayak

Native Slayer XC

Native’s Slayer line has a diverse range of pedal and paddle kayaks targeted towards the intermediate to advanced kayak fisherman. The Slayer XC is specifically aimed at fisherman who target riparian ecosystems and is a great boat for navigating all sorts of rivers. The XC wins our choice for the best value for a lot of reasons. Most of all though we think it strikes the perfect balance between fly fishing specialization and working as an excellent all purpose yak.

The Slayer XC features a highly configurable deck space. For times when you’re hitting deeper water the electronics pod can drop in to fit your fishfinder and other gadgets. If you’re headed down a shallow river the pod quickly swaps out to provide an open and snag-free deck space. Sight fishing and roll casting are no problem while you’re standing, because this yak was designed for stability. The 36.5″ wide flat bottomed hull provides superior stability while also allowing for quicker turning than deep chined hull types. You should have no problem facing the banks and casting while you float down river.

Designed for Drag

A dedicated drag chain channel in the stern is an awesome feature for slowing down your cruise. The line ties off on a cleat near the seat for quick and easy chain deployment and retrieval. The spring loaded skeg provides superior tracking for down river drifts. And it can be easily retracted with a turn of the handle for when you need a little more maneuverability. The XC is also outfitted with the normal comliment of high-end features such as vertical and horizontal rod holders, a high quality hi-lo seat, and plenty of storage.

We’re not sure what the perfect river kayak is, but we think the Slayer XC is pretty darn close. The XC is priced at $1,499 which represents a truly great value from one of the leading kayak brands. If you’re a river rat who lives for brookies, smallies, and muskies then the XC might just be the perfect fly fishing kayak for you.

What to Look for in A Fly Fishing Kayak

Stability

Fly fishing in a sitting position can be cramped and awkward. Standing provides a more natural casting position that allows you to better use your full body in executing a single fluid movement. It also allows you to take advantage of the wide open space in the middle of the water; a luxury ill afforded on banks snag happy branches and brush all around. 

The ability to stand on a kayak is largely determined by its hull design. Trimaran, cathedral, or extra wide hulls with deep chines will provide extra lateral resistance to deliver a stable and steady fishing platform. Stability often comes at the expense of speed, but it’s a tradeoff that we think is well worth the price.

Open Deck

Fishermen are well aware of the joy that comes from fishing. Few things are more satisfying than choosing the right lure and spot and being rewarded with a hungry bite. At the same time there are few things more frustrating for any angler than a snagged line. It seems that tree’s and brush were designed to foil every fishermen’s best efforts. Errant branches won’t plague you on a kayak, but that doesn’t make it risk free.

Open, spacious, kayak decks present fly fishermen the least frustration in casting their line out. Electronic pods and pedal drives might be great for fish finders and boot scooting around the lake. However they’re terrible for keeping free of line. An open deck will provide you plenty of room for your fly line to land unhindered and will prove a boon in managing your gear. 

Simplicity

Fly Fishing is well known as a more graceful and pure method of fishing. Its followers are oftentimes fanatical in their abhorrence of complicated gizmos (geared reels namely). For the neo-luddite fly fishermen extra technology represents another hurdle in the way of perfecting art. We respect the pursuit of perfection and so highly recommend that you too focus on finding a kayak that compliments your fishing, rather than the other way around.

In practical terms this means choosing a kayak that won’t dominate your focus and attention. A well made fishing kayak should blend into the background as you zone in on your fishing and technique. Pedal systems, motors, fishfinders, and other high tech accessories are great for conventional fishing and have their place in a modern setup. For fly fisherman though we think you’re better off leaving these at the store.

The Inuits, a group of native Arctic peoples, are largely credited with the invention of the kayak. The “Qajaq”, as they called it, roughly translates to “hunters boat”. Inuit hunters used their crafts to silently stalk seals and spear them from a distance. While the original inhabitants of Alaska, Greenland, and Siberia can lay claim to the kayaks origin America is the leader in terms of modern fishing kayaks. The majority of fishing kayak brands, such as Hobie, Native, and Bonafide, all call the good ol U.S. of A. home. Despite their large numbers though America isn’t home to the only players in the game. Foreign kayaks from around the world have been giving American brands a run for their money.

When it comes to kayak fishing there are basically two major ecosystems you can target: salt and freshwater. The United States has an abundance of both and kayak design generally reflects that. Longer skinnier kayaks take on coastal waters while heavier and more stable yaks dominate lakes and rivers. European, African, and Australian anglers generally have less freshwater and more coastline. In fact the EU, Africa, and Australia all have far more coastline that the US. For that reason foreign kayaks tend to lean more towards seafaring designs. We’ve put together the list below to make it easier for our fellow anglers abroad searching for a new ride.

Foreign Kayaks

We found 47 different models of fishing kayaks made outside of the United States. Recreational, whitewater, and other types of kayaks have been purposefully excluded. We’ve also excluded brand-less kayaks that are manufactured in China. Data for foreign kayaks is tough to find. If you know of a brand that we missed please let us know and we’ll happily update the list.

A Note about Currency

We’ve done our best to try and find the MSRP for each model on our list. The listed prices represent the best and most current pricing data we could find. We’ve also listed all prices in the manufacturer’s home country currency (when possible). This makes for an ugly column of data, but better represents each craft’s true cost to consumers. Prices inflate as products are moved across borders due to transportation and excise costs. Since we know most of you aren’t trading FX daily we’ve included a currency converter below for your convenience.

High End Foreign Kayak Brand

Stealth

The coast of South Africa is a pretty gnarly place. Great white sharks are frequent visitors and some of their favorite snacks are other sharks. Yellowfin Tuna, Skipjack, Cape Salmon, and Dorado are just a few of the lekker vis swimming around the Cape of Good Hope. So if you’re going to go kayak fishing in some of the wildest seas in the world you’re gonna want a kiff boat that’s fast.

When it comes to speedy yaks there’s nothing faster than racking kayaks. So if you set out to make a fast fishing kayak it helps to have some high octane paddling in your genes. Stealth Kayaks founder, Brett Challenor, applied the knowledge he gained from racing for South Africa towards a fast, stable, and versatile kayak that could hold its own against some of natures gnarliest fish. Today Brett, his father Bruce, and the entire Stealth team are known for making some of the coolest yaks outside of the U.S.

Unlike the majority of kayak producers today Stealth eschewed plastic in favor of a lighter and stronger material: fiberglass. Fiberglass boats are ideal for ocean environments; they can hold up to the toughest waves and are incredibly strong for their weight. However, they aren’t easy to make. These kayaks aren’t made in an easy-bake oven; they’re lovingly hand-crafted layer by layer to perfection. Stealth only makes around 600 kayaks each year. Although expensive they are one of the absolute best options for high seas anywhere.

Ocean Bound

Stealth has a wide range of different models but they’re all long, skinny, and fast. Their shortest fishing model, the Fisha 4.6, measures 460 cm Molded in seats provide the perfect paddling position along with sufficient comfort for longer trips. A center hatch allows on water access to cavernous storage perfect for storing rods or your latest catch. In between your legs sits one of the coolest features we’ve seen on any yak: a livewell with automatic water exchange. Big fish need big bait and nothing works better than live bait. The livewell keeps your dinner’s dinner ready for baiting up quick.

The more we learn about Stealth the more we’re jealous of all the bra’s in SA who get to use them. Stealth Kayaks has an international presence and can be sourced fairly easily through Europe and Australia. Tracking them down in the U.S. is difficult, but not impossible. If you’re on the coast and feel like getting on some big fish then check out a Stealth – you won’t regret it.

Affordable Foreign Kayak Brand

Fluid

As much as we love the greatest and latest in kayaks they aren’t the most approachable for beginner paddlers. Fluid has been helping new whitewater, polo, and angling paddlers get on the water quickly and affordably since 2002. They got their start in an old factory building in Parys, South Africa. Point 65 saw this problem and decided to do something about it.

Point 65’s solution to the problem of boat storage is a modular kayak system. Their kayaks can be broken into halves or thirds simply by flipping a few switches. Reassembly is just as easy. The advantages of their modular approach to kayaking are numerous. In essence they offer close to the same portability of inflatable kayaks with all the advantages of rotomolded plastic. We really like the fact that single-seaters can be easily upgraded to tandems with just a simple addition.

Kingfisher

The Point 65 lineup is diverse and caters to a wide range of paddlers. Modular sit insides, sit on tops, and even a paddleboard can all breakdown easily. While all of Point 65’s kayaks deserve a writeup we believe the Kingfisher deserves special attention. The Kingfisher is Point 65’s, and Sweden’s, one and only pedal driven kayak. The Kingfisher breaks apart into two sections that are about 5′ long and ~35 lbs each. Two clicks of the Snap-Tap system and the Kingfisher is ready to live up to its name.

New Zealand is an isolated country that looks like it’s close to falling off the map. Located approximately 4,000 kms from Australia it takes Kiwi’s approximately 4.5 hours to fly and see their closest neighbors. That’s almost as long as it takes to cross the continental United States by plane. Fortunately one of the benefits of being out in the middle of nowhere, or wops wops as the natives say, means there’s plenty of water nearby to fish.

A fitted “breadbox” slides into the tankwell and makes storing your catch a breeze. Finally we’re really big fans of their protected rudder design. It sits even with the keel so there’s no worry about damaging it in saltwater flats or over oyster beds.

The Viking lineup is small and focused – they do fishing kayaks and that’s it. 3 different solo models and 1 tandem offer superior seaworthy vessels at really great vessels. The most expensive option, the Viking Profish Reload, retails for just $1,499 which puts it in the mid-tier category for price. If you want to strike out for big waves and even bigger fish then definitely consider a craft from Viking.

Paddling might seem like a chore when you’re headed against the wind. But it’s actually a pretty efficient form of locomotion. When you’ve got the right type of boat, paddle, and stroke then you can propel yourself quickly and for a long time. However paddling can be a little problematic when you’re trying to fish. Positioning the boat and managing your rod and tackle simultaneously isn’t impossible. But it’s also not the easiest thing in the world. Pedal kayaks address the inherent difficulties of fishing from a paddle kayak elegantly. With a pedal kayak your legs take on locomotion and leave your hands free for casting, reeling, and lipping in the big ones.

Ever since Hobie introduced the first pedal drive system in 1997 the pedal drive market has exploded. Today there are 15 different pedal drives readily available in the U.S. and several foreign made options. Competition has bred innovation and companies are constantly trying to introduce greater efficiencies and features in their drives. Hobie debuted the original Mirage drive in 1997. Since then they haven’t exactly been resting on their laurels. Aside from becoming the biggest kayaking company out there they’ve also put in tons of R&D hours to improve their tech. The result is the 360 drive. The Mirage 360 drive debuted at the iCast expo in 2019 and has had paddlers buzzing with excitement ever since.

The Mirage 360 drive is unique in that it can rotate 360 degrees with just a simple turn of your wrist. Combined with a hand controlled rudder the Hobie PA 14 360 offers unparalleled steering and control. This 13’8″ kayak, that weighs 139 lbs (not including you and all your gear), can turn on a dime. Extreme maneuverability and efficient propulsion aren’t the only great features about this yak.

Fully Loaded

The PA 14 is a heavy kayak, but that’s only because it’s absolutely loaded with conveniences and luxuries. Two extra long H-Rails line the gunwales for easy accessory deployment. The stern tankwell is enormous and sports an 8″ sealed hatch, while the bow hatch is big enough to hold a couple bonitos on ice. An incredibly comfortable seat, new horizontal rod storage, retractable skeg, and safeguarded transducer mount are just a few of the features that put the PA 14 into a league of its own.

We’ve long compared Hobie as the BMW of kayaks. They continually put quality at the top of their design priority and it shows in every little detail. Hobie owners tend to be fanatical about their boats and with good reason. If you’re thinking about joining the fan club you’ll need to be prepared to pay BMW like prices. The Hobie Mirage Pro Angler 14 with 360 Drive has a retail price of $4,799. That might be a hard pill to swallow, but for that amount of money you’re getting one of the highest quality pedal kayaks available.

Riot Mako 10

As with any product line there are always going to be companies servicing the high end and low end. Luckily, in the case of pedal kayaks, the low end is still pretty darn good. The Riot Mako 10 is a neat little pedal kayak. Weighing only 58 lbs (with drive) this yak is both light on your arms and wallet. The 2020 model has a price of only $1,200. We’ve seen older models of the Mako 10 retail for just under $1,000, so keep an eye out for sales.

The Mako 10 delivers in the areas that count. It features a sturdy aluminum lawnchair style seat that can trim front to back. A bow and stern hatch provide storage for your gear. Four flush mount rods (two aft and two stern) will keep your rods secure. Steering is handled by a top mount rudder controlled by a side mounted handle on the left. Geartracks on the side and bungee tie downs are great for adding accessories and storing your gear.

The Impulse drive is unique in that it does not require any sort of oil. Through a combination of plastic and other corrosion resistant materials Riot has produced a capable and lightweight propulsion system. We especially like the see-through splash guard for prop alignment. All in all the Riot Mako 10 is a great option for paddlers on a budget. It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles but it will get you where you need to go. Taller paddlers should beware though as this model is short. If you’re over 6′ tall you might want to consider checking out the Mako 12 instead.

Lightning Kayaks Strike HD

Lightning Kayaks is a young company in the kayak game; they only started in 2018. However their debut model, the Strike HD, has already made a splash. The all American-made Strike retails for just $1,799. It’s got many of the same features as boats that cost twice as much, but at a fraction of the price.

The Strike HD borrows the best elements from different boats and combines them to present a great fishing vessel. The hull features a tri-maran design with deep chines to provide excellent stability for standing. The integrated rudder retracts into the hull for easy storage and transportation. 6 different gear tracks provide plenty of real estate for accessories. A cavernous stern tank well and bow hatch provide plenty of room for tons of gear.

There are also lots of little touches on the Strike HD that make a ton of sense. An indent on each outer side wall keeps your paddle in place. Rotomolded foot rests give you somewhere to rest your feet when you’re not pedaling. Their pedal drive system, the “Freedom Drive”, is reminiscent of early model Hobie Mirage drives. It operates smoothly and efficiently. Unfortunately it doesn’t feature an easy reverse mode. If you want to go backwards you’re gonna need to work it, put your thang down flip it and reverse it.

The Lightning team comes from an experienced kayak heritage and it shows in their freshman effort. We’re confident you’ll be seeing more and more Strikes cruising around you on the water over the next few years. Pedal kayaks revolutionized the kayak industry with the debut of Hobie’s mirage drive in 1997. Different variations and mechanisms have evolved over time, but one thing remains common among all pedal drive systems; they’re not cheap. Pedal drive kayaks cost $2,750 on average and the least expensive options come in right around $1,400. Luckily though, numerous companies are moving to make pedal kayaks more affordable through decoupling the kayak and the drive – allowing consumers to upgrade their yaks later.

Convertible kayaks make a lot of sense, especially if it’s your first yak or you’re on a budget. It takes time out on the water to learn what works for you and what features you wish you had. A paddle kayak built to accommodate a pedal drive will save you money up-front and let you spread out your boating investment. If, however, you find that you’re not in love with your paddle kayak after a season you can still trade up for a new one and won’t be out a mint.

Jackson Big Rig HD

The Jackson Big Rig HD/FD certainly lives up to its name; it’s a big big yak.The HD weighs in at 118 lbs (without the seat) and tips the scales at 145 lbs when it’s been fully outfitted with the Jackson Flex Drive 3D System. 13’3″ long, 40″ at the beam, and a total capacity of 550 lbs the Big Rig is a robust and hearty fishing machine. The Big Rig has some pretty cool features that are unique in kayaks of this size. It has both a bow and stern hatch (most yaks only have one in the bow) and a large tank-well for extra storage. Two flushmount rod holders near the stern and double tiered horizontal rod holders on each side provide plenty of accessible storage for your arsenal. Molded in fly reel pockets on each side also make storing 9′ fly rods a breeze.

Pedal and Power

The Jackson Flex Drive 3D System differs from other kayak pedal systems in some interesting ways. Foremost the Flex Drive has an easy to use height adjuster. Just the push or pull of the lever on the deck will move your prop close to the hull for storage, halfway down for shallow water, or fully deployed for deeper seas. Secondly the the upper pedal system and lower prop separate which is great for keeping your drive safe while you’re away. This decoupled approach makes motorizing the Big Rig a cinch. The new Jackson Flex Drive E Module is a self contained electric motor that replaces the pedals easily.

All of these great features don’t come free and Jackson’s Flex Drive pedal system is the most expensive on the market. It will cost you approximately $1,500 to upgrade the Big Rig HD. The electric motor upgrade costs $799 and doesn’t include a battery nor connection cables. So all in for a pedal and power upgraded Big Rig you’re looking at $4,500. That’s expensive, but the features and versatility of the Big Rig HD/FD can definitely make it worth your while. If you’re in the market for a Big Rig HD and you know you want the pedal drive (and can afford it upfront) then it makes a lot of sense to spring for the FD version. Its more expensive to purchase yak and drive separately. We’ve also seen the Big Rig sold for far less than the MSRP, so be sure to shop around.

Most Affordable Convertible Kayak

Vibe Shearwater 125

Vibe kayaks have long been renown for their high value at affordable prices. Their kayaks often offer more at their price point then many of the competitors and they’re set to continue the trend with their latest debut. The Vibe Shearwater 125 is a versatile upgradable kayak and hits the market will hit the market Spring of 2020. There’s been a lot of buzz about the Shearwater and for good reason: it looks amazing. The aggressive styling and sharp bow make for a boat that looks like it go toe to toe with a hammerhead shark. Seriously though, this yak looks awesome and is sure to turn some heads at the launch.

Shearwaters are a genera of sea faring birds that prey on fish; and we think that might be the inspiration for Vibe’s latest creation. The Shearwater measures 12’6″ long, weighs 92 pounds fully rigged, and has a slew of features too long to list here (instead go here). Most notably included is hand steerable rudder system, ample storage options, and the innovative elevated standing platform.

Advanced Customization

One of our favorite elements of Vibe’s Shearwater 125 is its flexibility. Much like the BigRig this yak can be easily converted to a fin-driven pedal drive, or easily equipped with an electric Bixby motor. Vibe offers its own fin-driven pedal system, the Vibe X Drive, for only $500. What really sets the Shearwater apart though is that it can third-party fin drives. As a result Hobie Mirage drives, Lightning Freedom Drive, or Pelican HyDryve should be usable (this hasn’t been tested yet), just advertised). With a base price of $1,300 the total upgraded cost will run around $1,800, which is extremely affordable for a pedal drive kayak.

The feature we believe most earns the mark of best value is Feelfree’s drive system. The Overdrive system is a beast of a pedal drive. Made from cast aluminum and with plastic the Overdrive will last for years to come. It’s height adjustable, which combined with the height adjustable seat, means you can find the perfect position for pedaling. This adjust-ability will allow you to find the settings that maximize your leg strength and minimize fatigue. It also comes with a case which makes protecting your drive a breeze off the water. Finally the Overdrive system has the most simple and compact motor conversion we’ve seen, it’s literally plug and play. Just slide in the battery and your legs can take a rest.

The Lure 13.5 has an MRSP of $1,319 and the Overdrive pedal system can often be found for just $900. For a total of $2,219 the pedal powered Lure 13.5 will put you on some fish in both style and comfort. The motor add-on runs at $1,300. So for a completely suped up 13.5 you’ll need a smidge more than $3,500.

One of the newest, and largest, additions to Hobie’s lineup is the Mirage ITrek Fiesta. And aye carumba this is a whopper of a boat. 6.5′ wide and 15′ long this inflatable party barge can seat four adults comfortably. But if you got extra friends tell them to come on over; because the Fiesta holds up to 1,000 lbs. It comes with two mirage kick up drives, but can fit four (just in case you happen to have two lying around).

The front facing seats can be arranged facing forward or backwards for a more like party atmosphere. And we have no doubt standing on the fiesta will be a breeze given it’s beam. In fact we’re eagerly awaiting pictures of the first real fiesta on the fiesta (cans only please). Outfit with Hobie’s high quality gear and thought-out design the Fiesta is sure to make waves when it debuts in Spring of 2022. But be ready to earn some credit card points. The fiesta has an advertised price of $5,399 (for now). Still cheaper than a yacht…..but barely.

Most Affordable Inflatable Fishing Kayak

Intex Excursion Pro

The Intex Excursion Pro is the cheapest inflatable fishing kayak on our list with an MSRP of just $299, and can often be found for far less. Although it may sound like an SUV the Excursion Pro isn’t exactly well equipped for going off-road. At 12’7″ the Excursion Pro comes equipped for tandem usage (including two paddles), but we think getting two full sized adults in this might be a little scary. The material on this inflatable isn’t as durable as higher end models, so you’ll need to be extra careful of hooks and spiny fish.

The Excursion Pro might not be perfect, but it will get you and one other out on the water. If you’re interested in getting into kayak fishing, but aren’t sure if it’s really for you, then this boat is a great option. Worst case scenario you’re out a few hundred and have a great gift for your nephews next birthday. Best case you’ve caught the yak bug for life.

Sea Eagle’s been making inflatable vessels since the 1960’s and it’s an gross oversimplification to say that they’ve gotten pretty darned good at it. The 385 Fast Track Angler is their higher end 12’6″ long yak made for fishing. We chose the 385fta for several key features that put it ahead of the competition, as well as a robust accessory ecosystem that permits easy customization and upgrades.

One of the coolest features of the 385fta is its hull, in particular its shape. Sea Eagle’s patented needleknife rigid inflatable keel has a sharp bow and stern to help the 385fta slice through the water. A longer length and stiff keel results in a yak that can paddle straight and fast. Rugged 1000 denier fabric and four separate chambers safeguard against punctures and sinking. Rod and lure management at both bow and stern provide ample storage room for tackle.

The 385fta is available in four different trim levels and can be outfitted in a variety of configurations. This yak can be set up as a tandem, rigged with swivel seats, or even a side mount trolling motor. The base trim, deluxe solo angler, includes an inflatable seat, pump, and carrying bag. Higher trim levels include more goodies, or they can be purchased separately as individual upgrades. We had a chance to play around on the 385, and it’s earned a permanent spot in the Yak Logic fleet.

Storage and Transportation

Most inflatable kayaks can be stored under your coffee table – which is something no plastic kayak will ever lay claim to. Inflatable fishing kayaks small form factor makes them perfect for anybody who simply doesn’t have the space for a 10 to 12 foot long boat. Inflatable yaks are perfect for urban dwellers who can’t fit a yak in the elevator, or doesn’t want to pay for extra monthly storage.

Transportation is also way easier. You don’t have to worry about getting the right roof rack or how to lift a boat up onto your car. Just throw your boat in the trunk and go (literally grab and go). We imagine it’s even possible to carry some of the smaller models on a bike or motorcycle; perfect for an easy paddler who’s born to be wild.

Weight

While there are some really great lightweight fishing kayaks, most of them just can’t compare to the weight savings offered by inflatables. The lightest model on our list, the Star Challenger, comes in at only 27 lbs. These lighter loads don’t come at the cost of capacity either – they can still carry quite a large payload. Paddling a lighter kayak is much easier as well – each stroke will require less energy than it would in a heavier craft. It’s true that lighter boats can get pushed around by the wind more, but a good anchor will typically solve that problem. Anybody with limited mobility or diminished upper body strength should seriously consider an inflatable kayak for getting out on the water.

Buoyancy

Inflatable fishing kayaks are nearly impossible to sink as long as they’re inflated. Their increased buoyancy makes them great for big water – these yaks are right at home in the open ocean. High buoyancy and flatter bottoms also make inflatable fishing kayaks well suited for whitewater. It’s pretty cool that most of the yaks listed here can be quickly converted for some down river fun.

Drawbacks

Setup/Breakdown

Inflatable fishing kayaks need to be pumped up before they can hit the water (obviously). Luckily manual and electric air pumps make the process a lot easier than blowing up your kids pool toys. Inflation and deflation isn’t a huge drawback; every kayak has some degree of prep and packing. The process with inflatables can take a little longer, so make sure to budget a little extra time at the boat ramp.

Tracking

Tracking refers to a boats ability to stay straight while paddling, and it’s far more important than you might think. Plastic kayaks typically accomplish this through chines, keels, and other hull design elements. Inflatable fishing kayaks with flat bottoms have a very slight draft, meaning that they sit high in the water. This results in poor tracking – each paddle stroke will cause lateral movement in addition to forward momentum. Skegs can help diminish poor tracking to some degree. Inflatable kayaks with rubber keels, sharp entry bows, and v-shaped hulls will fare far better than flat hulled options.

There are plenty of other kayaks that are capable of seating two, but aren’t explicitly designed for it, and so they’ve been excluded from this list. The Hobie Mirage Tandem Island is not only the most expensive tandem kayak, it’s the most expensive of any fishing kayak. Featuring two mirage drives, two stabilizers (amas) , a sail kit, and a slew of upgrades the Tandem Island almost qualifies as a small yacht. The Tandem Island is a very specific type of watercraft designed for open water sailing and fishing. It’s one of the few kayaks that has incorporated a sail as a principle design element, rather than as an retrofit add-on. As a hybrid catamaran/kayak the Island excels at catching the wind and can easily reach speeds of 11 knots (12.5 mph).

The Tandem Island is a blast to be on. It’s perfect for hopping between sand barges or trolling across a bay. Surfing the high seas and catching the wind adds an element of speed and daring that other yaks simply can’t match. With an MSRP of $7,339 the Island will put a big dent in your wallet. However there aren’t too many other yaks that can match the Island’s performance at sea. And for that price you’re getting a top of the line watercraft from a high tier, high quality brand. Lifetime Sport Fisher Angler 100

The Lifetime Sport Fisher Angler 100 is a rather short and light tandem kayak. At only 12′ long and with a weight of 60 lbs this kayak is more akin to many single seater yaks than it is other tandems. While it may not feature all the bells and whistles the Angler 100 will get the job done. The seats are very close; if you’re in the stern you could easily kick your partner. The closer seating arrangement can make it difficult to fish together. Finding room to store gear and rods can be frustrating as well.

At an MSRP of $650 the Angler 100 is well below the average and median price of tandem fishing kayaks. Despite some of its shortcomings the Angler 100 is a serviceable vessel. We think it’s probably better suited for adults taking out kids, or small dogs, rather than for two full sized people.

Feelfree Lure II

The Feelfree Lure II is the only tandem fishing kayak that can be upgraded with a pedal drive. Unlike some of the other tandem pedal kayaks the Lure II has only one drive well. That means whoever’s at stern will be doing all the work, or you could slide in the battery pack to motor it. Feelfree’s overdrive pedal system is unique in that it easily converts into a 40 lb thrust motor. Just insert the battery pack, lean back, and sip you beer while you pass all those suckers paddling.

The Lure II measures 14’2″ long and is a tad hefty at 92 lbs, but easily manageable for two people. The Lure II runs for $1,539 and the Overdrive Pedal Console costs approximately $930. The Overdrive Motordrive runs at $1,400, so for a fully tricked out Lure II with pedal system and motor you’re looking at $3,869. That’s not cheap, but being able to space these expenses out makes the price much more approachable. It’s far more effective than the traditional method, which is to swap out yaks every couple of years. Our Pick for the Best Value Tandem Fishing Kayak

There are some true gems in the tandem kayak category and a wide variety of shapes and sizes to suit any couple. Our pick for the best value, however, goes to the Vibe Yellowfin 130T.

Vibe Yellowfin 130T

The Vibe Yellowfin 130T offers numerous “must have” features at an affordable price of only $1,049. At 13′ long the 130T is a little on the shorter side for tandem kayaks, but the seats are spaced far enough apart to not be a problem. Vibe’s high quality lawn chair style seats afford each paddler plenty of comfort and two hatches provide dry storage. The hull is sharp enough to track well while still remaining stable enough for standing. It comes rudder ready and can be steered from either bow or stern footrests.

Weighing only 80 lbs, but with a capacity of 500 lbs, you should have no problem with transportation or gear storage. Front and rear tankwells, gear tracks, cupholders, and 3 different seating positions round out the 130T to make a great deal. The fact that it comes with two paddles is the cherry on top. Capacity

Fishing tandem kayaks biggest selling point is that they can carry two people. It’s true there are non-tandem models that can make the same boast. But those yaks won’t be as accommodating for your passenger as a craft purposefully designed for two. These designs also translate into bigger payloads. If you’re looking to bring along a ton of gear for extended voyages then a tandem will carry the weight without sacrificing performance.

Space

Extra length and beam doesn’t just translate to extra carrying capacity. It also conveys more far more real estate than solo varieties. If you’re the type to bring 10 rods, your entire tackle collection, and still need to stop by Cabelas before hitting the water, than a tandem might suit you well. We’re personally fans of the grab n go philosophy. But we recognize that everybody fishes differently, and when you pull up that new PR because you had just the right bait at the right time, you can smirk at us with confidence.

Co-Pilot

What would Han be without Chewie? Butch Cassidy without the Sundance Kid? The Three Musketeers without two of the Musketeers? Ok that last one doesn’t work so well. The point is that having a buddy in the trenches is a lot better than gunning by yourself. Paddling is easier, pedaling is easier. Price

A tandem kayak basically needs two of everything: two seats, two sets of footrests, two cupholders, etc. All those extra components and additional plastic add quite a bit of cost so prices, by necessity, have to be higher. Seats and pedal drives tend to be some of the most expensive parts of a kayak. Any boat with two sets of drives or lawn chair style seats is going to be far pricier than their single seater kin. If you need to fit multiple passengers, but can’t justify the price, then consider checking out canoes that are 15′ or longer.

Seating Arrangement

Not all tandem kayaks are created equal. Higher end models have multiple seat configurations and can allow face to face conversation. The majority however are limited to a traditional front to back seating arrangement. That’s great for paddling, but can cause problems for fishing or socializing. Longer kayaks (over 14′) generally negate tangle ups with fishing, but you’ll still need to be cognizant if your partner is a little too exuberant with their casting.

Transportation and Storage

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that fishing tandem kayaks are longer and heavier than single seat kayaks. When you’re out with a partner the extra load shouldn’t be unmanageable. There are two of you to distribute the chore of loading, unloading, and transportation. If, however, you plan on using a tandem kayak solo then the extra weight and dimensions could prove difficult to handle. Kayak trailers may be a necessity depending on the fishing tandem model you choose.
